A New Haircut, Activewear Essentials and an Outfit

A New Haircut, Activewear Essentials and an Outfit

Today’s post is full of a whole lot of randomness, so bear with me!  Last Friday, I made the decision to get five inches of my hair chopped off.  This is the shortest it’s been since I was pregnant with my daughter Aubrey – 18 years ago. (For a funny story about that haircut, watch the first 2 minutes of my Facebook video below.) Honestly it was a little bit of a shock to me, I wanted a change but maybe not quite this short.  It’s growing on me though!

Here’s the new haircut in case you didn’t see it on social media yet.

And yes, as soon as I learn how to style this bad boy on my own (if I ever master it!), I’ll do a tutorial video for the blog!

Here’s a Facebook video I did last Friday right after I got it done, you can see the back and sides of the cut a little better in it.  I’m also sharing my five workout essentials and how to build your own activewear capsule wardrobe by mixing and matching them.

Products Mentioned in Video:

1. Sports Bra:  Both Ways Bra

2. Yoga Pants:

3. Workout Tanks:  Cool Racerback

4. Long Sleeved Tees:  Alexa Tee/Mallow Tee

5. Running Shoes:  Nike Airmax Tailwind 8

Click the image below for more info on the 2017 Activewear Capsule and how you can get your shopping list and outfits for just $19.

And finally, a few of you asked about the outfit I was wearing in the video so here’s a full length shot of it.  Obviously I just can’t get enough of my winter white cords!  The navy sweater is actually a mixed media tunic, the back of it is sheer fabric.  This exact tunic is sold out but click here for a similar one for under $20.

Here are the accessories I paired up with this outfit, all from Stella and Dot’s spring collection.  One of the biggest perks of being a stylist is getting my discount on their accessories and sampling them at 50% off!  The neutrals in this necklace go with just about everything.  This cross body bag is my first piece from their Covet collection and I’m in love!  It’s buttery soft and so well made.

SAHMonday: Turtleneck, Jeans and Over the Knee Boots

SAHMonday: Turtleneck, Jeans and Over the Knee Boots

I already know what you’re thinking…over the knee boots for staying at home!?!

YES!

Honestly, when I got my first pair this past fall, I thought I wouldn’t get much wear out of them.  BUT, once I put them on and realized how comfortable they are (as comfy as my favorite pair of flats and comfier than my riding boots), I realized that they were definitely a wear at home kind of boot.  The fabric shaft and low heel definitely contribute to the comfort level.

Plus they make me feel super chic and stylish on my work from home days, even if no one sees me but my hubby, kids and dogs.  🙂

If you’re new around here, SAHMonday is weekly outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning.  You can check out the other outfits in this series here.

These outfits are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together, so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run.  Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet.  If you don’t have my exact pieces, that’s ok.  Just use one of the substitutions that I recommend.

Today’s SAHMonday outfit formula is what I wore for my daughter’s pediatrician appointment and it’s SUPER easy.  All you need is a neutral long sweater or tunic, your favorite jeans, a pair of over the knee boots (or riding boots) and a long necklace with a pop of color.  I picked this turquoise one from Chesley Mae because it always looks great with neutrals.

Alison’s Friday Favorites

Alison’s Friday Favorites

TGIF!  I hope your January is off to a great start.  Our son Devon turned 21 on Monday, which is still completely blowing my mind.  21 – this is not ok! I still remember every detail of his birth like it was yesterday. He was born in the blizzard of ’96, three weeks early.  My water broke after cleaning three feet of snow off my car.  I’m so happy now that he came three weeks before his due date because his early January birthday means he’s always home from college on break and we get to spend it with him.  Maybe I unknowingly planned it that way?  🙂

Favorite #1 – Our First Snow!

OK, in all fairness it was only 1/10 of an inch but hey, it was snow in Texas!  And it fell in huge flakes for about 4-5 hours last Friday.  How exciting!  Our youngest cat Paisley was completely fascinated by it and didn’t leave the back door the entire time it was falling.

Favorite #2 – Friday Night Church

maxresdefault

One of our family commitments in the new year was to attend church more often.  Most Sundays, the kids just want to sleep in so we end up catching the live service streaming online while having coffee in our PJ’s.  The past few weeks we’ve been going to the Friday night service at Chase Oaks and loving it!  It’s a very laid back, casual service and a great way to kick off the weekend.  (P.S. if you’re local to DFW and looking for a home church, we LOVE Chase Oaks and have been going for years.  Even if you’re not local, you can tune in on Sunday mornings for their live service online.)

Favorite #3 – IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream

In the winter months, I have to switch up my facial moisturizer to something a bit more, well, moisturizing!  The only issue is that I can’t stand anything heavy or greasy feeling.  My go-to moisturizer the past two winters has been IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream.  It’s a little on the pricey side BUT this jar lasts forever!  You only need a dab to cover your entire face and neck.  Well worth it.

Favorite #4 – Nike Airmax Tailwind 8

I somehow managed to get an infection in my big toe right before the holidays.  It had been hurting for a few days but one night I woke up with it bright red, swollen and throbbing in pain.  A trip to the urgent care confirmed an infection in my toe caused by my running shoes being too tight in the toe box.  After taking a week off from working out, a round of antibiotics, daily foot soaks and not being allowed to wear a shoe, I decided it was time to find a new pair of running shoes!

Honestly I felt like it was finding Cinderella’s slipper.  None of them met all of my requirements for a wider toe box, enough cushioning, lightweight and stylish (yes, that matters too!) until I met this pair, the Nike Airmax Tailwind 8. They are SO comfy, like walking on a cloud, seriously.  The toe box is wide enough without looking like Frankenstein and they are lightweight enough for running.

Favorite #5 – Sunny Dog Walking Days

After a few days of freezing temps, it felt awesome to get back outside and walk our golden retriever Bailey again.  She starts to get really antsy and do bad things for attention if she spends too long cooped up inside.  Mainly she goes upstairs and gets into the kids’ candy stashes and hauls it downstairs.  The thing that cracks me up is she doesn’t actually eat the candy.  She just lays it in the middle of the living room floor so that we see it and know that she did a “no, no”.

Here’s what I wore for our walk last Sunday.  These yoga pants are my all-time favorite, worth every single penny!

10 Must Haves to Fight the Mom Frump + 7 Outfits

10 Must Haves to Fight the Mom Frump + 7 Outfits

Hey pretties! After my recent SAHMonday outfit posts, I’ve gotten some e-mails from a few readers asking for my must have closet basics for stay at home moms to rebuild their wardrobe and fight the mom frump, specifically for winter. Which jogged my memory about this guest post that ran at the beginning of winter on my friend Jessica’s blog, Life as Mom. I decided to go ahead and publish it on GYPO today. If you already know me and my story on how I started Get Your Pretty On, you can skip to the pieces and outfits. Otherwise, here’s a little backstory on me and my blog!

How it all started

Hi, I’m Alison Lumbatis, a mom of three and recovering yoga pants addict. Four years ago, I decided to start this blog called Get Your Pretty On to document my journey out of my yoga pants mom rut. After spending fourteen years working in corporate America, I was afforded the opportunity to work from home which was wonderful in so many ways.

Unfortunately it’s what also led me to falling into my yoga pants pit of despair! After about six months of my new work arrangement, I stopped fixing my hair, putting on makeup and dressing in real clothes. It was definitely one of the perks of working from home but also one of the pitfalls. The worst part? I wasn’t even doing anything active that warranted wearing yoga pants.  🙂

My rut was taking a toll on more than my appearance, it also effected my motivation and how I felt about myself. I knew something had to change. The first thing I decided to tackle was rebuilding my wardrobe but I had NO idea where to start. When I did a quick internet search for everyday outfits for moms and how to fight the mom frump, I came up empty. There were plenty of blogs and resources for dressy outfits, work wear and designer outfits WAY out of my budget. But barely anything for everyday casual affordable outfits that I could “do real life” in.

Creating My Casual Look

So I set out to change that. I started rebuilding my wardrobe one piece at a time. Why one piece at a time? Because I used to be a terrible shopper! I’d go out and buy a big bag of clothes, come home and dump them out on my bed and realize that nothing in there went with anything else. I vowed to change that and “shop with a purpose”. Everything that I bought had to be able to be paired up in at least three to four different ways.

I started with the basics – a great fitting pair of dark wash jeans, quality t-shirts and layering pieces, boyfriend cardigans and comfortable ballet flats and loafers. Slowly I added in accessories like printed scarves, statement necklaces, a pendant necklace and a well made leather purse. Before I knew it, I had a mix and match wardrobe that worked for just about any of my every day activities.

Helping Others in their style rut

Fast forward to today, my greatest joy in life (besides my family) is helping other women stuck in a style rut. There are few things that make me happier than hearing a woman tell me that she’s feeling more confident and her life is easier because she has a fashionable, functional wardrobe full of mix and match outfits.

Most of these women have joined Outfit Formulas®, my online styling program. Each season I give participants a shopping list of classic pieces and on-trend items that they are free to shop for on their own. They can spend as much or as little as they want, many shop their closets first. Each seasonal capsule builds on the last. It’s designed so you spend less and less each time around. I also provide a list of links to online retailers for the pieces on the shopping list, if you want more guidance.

Participants have about two weeks to get all of their pieces in place. During that time, our private Facebook group is buzzing with fitting room selfies of women asking for opinions and advice, shopping tips being swapped and new friendships being formed. It’s honestly the best part of Outfit Formulas®!

Once the pieces are in place, it’s time for us to style our outfits. Every day for roughly 30-35 days, participants get an e-mail in their inbox showing them a different mix and match outfit combination created from pieces on their shopping lists. The women post their outfit selfies and show off their newfound style. We also host fun gift card giveaways and regional girls’ nights out.

Today, I’m giving you a tiny taste of what an Outfit Formulas Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe is all about with my ten must-haves to fight the mom frump and seven winter outfits created from these pieces.

SAHMonday: Boyfriend Cardigan, T-Shirt and Jeans

SAHMonday: Boyfriend Cardigan, T-Shirt and Jeans

I don’t know about your neck of the woods but our north Texas weather has a split personality this time of the year.  One day it’s in the 30’s, a few days later 60’s and 70’s.  It’s almost impossible to plan what to wear so I usually just look at the forecast in the morning and wing it!  Since today’s weather is on the warmer side, I’m dressing in lighter layers for running errands.

In case you missed last week’s post, I’ve started a new outfits series called SAHMonday.  It’s outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning.

The outfits in this series are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together, so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run.  Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet.  If you don’t have my exact pieces, that’s ok.  Just use one of the substitutions that I recommend below.

Today’s SAHMonday outfit formula is made up of a few of my all-time favorite basics – a long cardiganloose fitting t-shirt, skinny jeans and metallic flats.  Add an outfit completer like a long necklace or scarf and voila – instant outfit!

Long Cardigan + T-Shirt + Long Necklace + Jeans + Metallic Flats

Jeans:  Leggings

Long Necklace:  Scarf (plan your outfit around the colors in your favorite scarf!)
