Why I Gave Stitch Fix a Second Chance

Why I Gave Stitch Fix a Second Chance

If you’ve never heard me talk about Stitch Fix before on the blog, there’s a great reason for that. Mainly because I learned that if you don’t have anything nice to say…

Well, you know the rest!

I’m just not one to give bad reviews of products or services and especially not on my blog. My philosophy has always been to promote what I love.

And honestly I didn’t love Stitch Fix.

A couple of years ago I signed up for my first fix and was super excited for it to arrive – only to find that most of the pieces were dressy or business casual and poor quality for the price.  I felt like my stylist totally ignored the fact that I was a work from home mom on a budget.  It was very disappointing and needless to say, I sent every piece back and canceled my subscription.

Another Try?

Fast forward a few years and I’ve started seeing other subscribers fixes and reviews and decided it was time to give them another try.  It seems that they’ve gotten a LOT better with both the styling and the pieces.  I love it when companies take customer feedback and improve their products and services and it seemed like this is exactly what Stitch Fix did!

How it Works

If you’re not already familiar with Stitch Fix, which I’m pretty sure most of the world is, this is how it works.  First, you fill out a questionnaire to determine what your personal style is and select your sizes.  You’re also given a free form fill-in where you can share information with your stylist on any special events you have coming up or what you dress for on a daily basis.

I shared with my stylist that I’m a work from home mom who likes to feel put together for my day to day life.  I also attend a few events each month that require me to be a little bit dressier, including date nights.  I was also able to submit my Pinterest board of outfits so she could get an even better feel for what I wear.

The styling fee is $20 but this comes off the total of any pieces you decide to keep.  After filling out my questionnaire, my first fix was scheduled and arrived the following week.

The Styling

I’m thrilled to say that this time the stylist totally got me.  The pieces in my first fix were dressy enough for a casual date night, yet could also be easily dressed down for a day at home.  They also featured some of the latest trends, like fringe and frayed hems, floral and a sueded texture jacket.

The Pieces

stitch fix sunburst necklace

The Prices

Priced individually, the pieces were higher than what I normally spend.  The floral top alone was $64!  BUT they give you a deep discount if you buy all five pieces.  The discounted total for everything was only $211, which I found to be really fair considering the jeans were $88.  If all of the pieces had fit me properly, it would’ve been a no-brainer to keep all five.

What I Kept

Although I LOVED all of the pieces, I only kept one – the fringe hem top.  It’s so cute and versatile! My total spend on this fix was $27.83 (not including my $20 styling fee which was subtracted from the full price of the top).

As for why I chose not to keep the other pieces, I have a similar floral top, the jeans were super cute but a size too big, the jacket didn’t fit me right in the sleeves (and I don’t think I’d wear it much anyway) and I have a similar necklace from Stella and Dot that’s better quality.

An added bonus that I also kept was the styling card included with the pieces.  It shows you two different ways to pair up each piece using items from your closet, or that you can shop for on your own.  I kept it in my closet for outfit inspiration, along with all of my GYPO Style Challenge outfit ideas.

Here’s how I styled the fringe hem t-shirt.

My Verdict

I’m excited for my next fix!  It’s an easy and affordable way to add trends in monthly and Stitch Fix is not a competitor of my own GYPO Style Challenge – as a matter of fact, the two play extremely well together. Style Challengers that subscribe to Stitch Fix are able to easily incorporate their pieces into the challenge. The GYPO Style Challenge and Stitch Fix use the same seasonal trends which makes it even easier.

It’s Your Turn:  Do you subscribe to Stitch Fix?  If so, what are your thoughts?

Menswear Fix: The November List

Menswear Fix: The November List

Christmas shopping for our kids gets harder every year.  They are now almost 21, 17 and 12 and not really lovers of “stuff”.  So this year my husband and I had to get creative.  We decided to focus more on experiences than on stuff so we’re taking them on a pre-Christmas vacation to NYC!

NYC at Christmas is more my bucket list item than theirs but shhhh….they don’t need to know that.  I’ve always dreamt of seeing the store window displays, the tree at Rockefeller Center and skating in Central Park – and of course eating lots and lots of amazing food and taking in a show or two!

I’m sure I’m romanticizing it a bit and we already know that it’s going to be COLD, especially for our thin Texas blood.  So, as the family stylist, I’ve started putting together some cold weather outfits for everyone.

The guys, my husband Craig and son Devon, have it the worst.  Their winter wardrobes are virtually non-existent so I’m starting with them first.  Today I’m sharing one of those wintery outfits in this month’s Menswear Fix.

Earlier this fall, I created a 14 day capsule wardrobe for men, the Fall 2016 Menswear Bootcamp.  It went over so well that I’ve decided to start offering you with a monthly resource, similar to the Pretty Fix but for the guys. Since Pretty Fix doesn’t quite work in this case, let’s just simply call it the Menswear Fix.  🙂

Here are the five pieces I recommend for your guy to stay warm and on trend this month.

November Menswear Fix

A warm flannel shirt is a winter weekend must-have.  Shopping Options:  One/Two/Three

2. Puffer Coat

If your guy’s wardrobe could use an update, you’re going to love the new monthly feature at GYPO.  A while back, I came to the realization that many of you are helping the guys in your lives with their style decisions.  A common theme was that you were struggling to find resources and wanted something similar to the GYPO Style Challenge, but a capsule wardrobe for men.

For the Guys: Spring “Handsome” Fix

For the Guys: Spring “Handsome” Fix

All the ladies have been elevating our style with the help of the monthly Pretty Fix and the Style Challenges, but what do we do about the men in our lives?  As a personal stylist for J. Hilburn Men’s Clothing, I work with guys to help them build a wardrobe of clothing that works together.  Let me tell you, I think dressing men is so much easier than what we have to deal with as women!  For men, styles don’t change dramatically, so they can use the same sportcoat/shoes/shirt/insert other clothing item here for YEARS!  However, a few seasonal updates can definitely make their wardrobe more fun and keep them on trend.

As a stylist with J. Hilburn, we specialize in luxury, custom made clothing that fits to the guy’s measurements, but I have included a lot of options from other retailers for all price ranges.  I have personally found that investing in good quality men’s clothing makes sense, since men usually shop much less frequently than women and keep their clothing much longer.

Here is my Spring “handsome fix” for the guys.  Whether it is your husband, son, or dad who needs a style upgrade, here are five pieces for Spring that will update his wardrobe and help him keep up with your great new looks. All of the Spring update items listed below will stay in style for quite awhile and are versatile enough to go with lots of other items in his closet.  With Father’s Day right around the corner, it’s a great time to give the men in our lives a little style love.

1. Brighter Blue Sportcoat

Most men have a standard navy blue sportcoat, but a brighter shade of blue is THE trend in menswear this year.  It may scare some men at first, but it’s very versatile and wearable.  It will go with most things in their closet — think khaki pants, charcoal pants, and denim.  A sportcoat is my favorite way to “dress up” an outfit and look put together.  A sportcoat and jeans is my favorite date night look!

Options 1/2/3

InkBlue

*Bonus – get the full brighter blue suit and triple his outfit options.  He’ll have a full suit to wear plus trousers to wear separately with his Spring shirts.

2. White “Updated” Oxford Shirt or White Linen Shirt

This is not your standard white dress shirt.  I love an option with khaki sport buttons and a more relaxed wash.  This will go with the above blue sportcoat but looks equally great with shorts or khaki pants.  This updated oxford is the Spring workhorse.

Options 1/2/3

3. 5 Pocket Pants

These are the perfect pant when your guy is not sure what to wear.  Not quite jeans but not quite a chino, these pants can go almost anywhere this Spring. Play it safe with a khaki color, but I love a pop of color — safari green, light blue, or gray!

Options 1/2/3

4. Suede Oxford Shoes

Suede oxfords make my heart skip a beat.  They are the finishing touch that shows a man’s style. Suede is definitely year round footwear these days.  These can dress up a jeans and button down shirt.  Wear them with a suit to make it feel less stuffy.  The hardest part is deciding which color to pick.  I’m partial to the gray suede.  Don’t forget a matching belt (a man “style rule”… shoes should match belt!).

Options 1/2/3

5. Spring Pocket Tee

Put away the old college T-shirts (wait, is my husband the only person who still wears these?)  A classic, pocket Tee in a fun Spring color looks grown up and pulled together.  Pair it with the brighter blue sportcoat, or wear it with denim, summer shorts, and those 5 pocket pants.

Options 1/2/3

Get Pretty, Kick Butt | How To Do it All

Get Pretty, Kick Butt | How To Do it All

Welcome back for the second excerpt from my book “Get Pretty, Kick Butt!”  If you missed last Friday’s post, I shared my personal story of how I got into and out of my mom rut.  Today I’m sharing one of my biggest secrets for getting more done.

Being a mom of three, blogging and managing a busy home can be a little overwhelming sometimes.  So how do I do it all?  I honestly couldn’t if I didn’t have some kind of meticulous plan for carrying it out.  Meticulous, but do-able.  That plan is what I call my Kick Butt Routine and it has truly revolutionized my life.  Read on for today’s excerpt.

The Kick Butt Routine

“Making and sticking to a daily schedule establishes the framework for getting more done.”

That first week that I stuck to my new routine was life changing.  I got SO much accomplished.  When my husband came home to find me preparing a healthy meal WHILE looking pretty, he was pleasantly surprised.  The house had been cleaned up and the kids were done with their homework.  Yes, my new Kick Butt Routine was already changing my life – and my family’s too.

“Keeping Hours”

The key to organizing my life was realizing that I had to treat my week days like work days.  One of the things I missed about being in the corporate confines was the need to “keep hours”.  I didn’t even give it any thought back then.  Work started at 8:00 a.m. and was over at 5:00 p.m.  In between I had regularly scheduled calls, daily responsibilities and a lunch break.  When work was done, I drove home, fixed dinner and did homework with the kids.  Life, in some ways, was simpler when I worked in an office!  I had to translate that same structured routine over into my home environment.

Now my weekdays are governed by the Kick Butt Routine.  On weekends, I allow my schedule to naturally flow as I would have when I worked in an office.  The other five days of the week though are carefully planned out to help me “keep hours”.
