I was going to title this post “How to Wear a Plaid Shirt Without Looking Like a Lumberjack, the Brawny Paper Towel Guy or a 90’s Grunge Rocker”, but I didn’t, for obvious reasons.
However, the sentiment is the same.
You can style plaid shirts without being one bit brawny or grungy. Plaid shirts are totally on trend for fall and winter. They’re also completely wearable (and dare I say, chic?) when paired up properly.
Here are three of my favorite ways to pair up plaid shirts.
Are you looking for even more ways to style a plaid shirt? Then you’re in luck! A plaid shirt is one of the items on the wardrobe basics shopping list for the Fall Style Me Pretty Challenge. You’ll get a shopping list of fall pieces plus 21 days of outfits created from those pieces. Here’s an example of one of them.
Regular registration closes on Thursday, October 2nd. Sign up HERE for the best rate!

Want to know what the most burning question has been on GYPO readers’ lips lately? I’ll bet you can guess from the title.
How the heck do you wear ankle boots?!?
They’re cute, no doubt, but these little buggers can be a bit tricky to style. When I bought my first pair, they sat in the closet for almost an entire season with no wear. When I finally got up the nerve to pair them with some jeans, I was hooked and eager to find other ways to wear them. Before long, I was experimenting with all kinds of ways to pair them up and ready to add to my ankle boot collection.
Here are five of my favorite ways to pair up ankle boots.
1. Ankle Boots with Ankle Jeans
Well, duh, that just makes sense, right? Ankle jeans were practically made for ankle boots and retailers are getting on the bandwagon with this trend. There’s hardly a store you’ll walk into this fall that doesn’t have some cute ankle jeans that are the perfect length to fall just above your ankle boots.
2. Ankle Boots with Cuffed Skinny Jeans
If your skinny jeans are longer than ankle length, just cuff them right above the top of your boot. Easy peasy!
3. Ankle Boots with Boyfriend Jeans
Take a cue from Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley and pair your slouchy boyfriend jeans with a cute pair of ankle boots. Throw on a t-shirt, scarf and jacket and you’re instantly chic for fall.
Or try the trend with a military jacket and white tee.
4. Ankle Boots With Socks
Scrunch some wool socks above your ankle boots when pairing them with skinny jeans or leggings for a cute and cozy look.
5. Ankle Boots With Dresses/Skirts
Swap out your typical heels and try a pair of tights with ankle boots this fall. It’s a modern look that’s sure to instantly update your outfit.
None of us discussed in advance which color we would be styling but we all ended up with neon yellow. Great minds think alike! For the collaboration, I went back through my archives from last spring and summer and found three of my favorite looks featuring highlighter yellow.
It’s Your Turn: What’s your favorite way to style neon for summer? Tell me in the comments!
*I’m taking a blog break through 7/20. Even though I won’t be able to respond to comments, I still love reading them! In the meantime, you can follow along with our family’s adventures on Instagram.
Love the colored denim trend but aren’t sure how to pull it off without looking like your teenaged daughter? I’m in love with it too and am excited to see retailers like Loft and other “grown-up” stores carrying mom-appropriate fits. But what do you pair them with to create a put-together look that isn’t over the top?
1. Pair colored denim with neutrals. Let your bright jeans be the star. By pairing with neutral tops and shoes, you can allow the personality of the colored denim to shine. Beige, black, white and gray all look fantastic with brightly hued bottoms and won’t compete for the spotlight.
2. Add some animal print. You knew this one was coming – I put animal print with everything. It’s a neutral in my style book and works great on cardigans, jackets, tops, shoes or belts paired with colored denim. Just make sure you keep all of your other accessories solid and wear only one piece of animal print at a time.
3. Color block it! Bright with bright? Why not! As long as you keep everything else simple you can pull it off. Try a neon yellow top with turquoise jeans or a bright orange top with red jeans. Play around with different color blocking combos to maximize the outfit potential of your colored denim jeans.
Colored jeans are an easy and versatile way to update your wardrobe. Find them in your favorite fit and don’t be afraid to try this very mom-appropriate trend.
It’s Your Turn: Have you tried the colored denim trend? What’s your favorite way to wear colored jeans?
Much like Alison, I welcome the change in seasons and although I can’t say I totally love the cold, I do look forward to the crisp fall air. It’s the signal that I’m officially in the clear to pack away my sandals and flip-flops and break out my boots. I love wearings my boots and I love having a variety of styles in my closet. Boots are a great closet staple and a good investment piece if you’re able. A well-made pair of boots in a classic style will last for years.
This season I’m seeing a pretty big shift from the super low ankle boots and sleek lines to something a bit more chunky. Knee-high boots are also in the spotlight again and I’m loving the slouchy texture. Knee-high boots are a perfect example of something that is a classic meaning it never really goes out of style but is back having its moment again. There is a difference between something being truly out of style and just not on-trend. Learn more about this HERE!
1. Knee High Boots
In seasons past it was all about the ankle boot. Knee-high boots were still around because of course, they are a classic, they just weren’t totally having their moment. Well, it seems like their moment is back this fall. I’m seeing tons of cute riding boots which are typically flat or have a small heel, but I’m also seeing knee-high boots with a block heel. One of my favorite variations of this boot have a scrunched, slouchy appearance. These are a great pairing with skinny jeans or a great fall dress.
2. Chelsea Boots
The Chelsea boot by definition is a boot that is close-fitting, ankle height, and has an elastic side panel. Typically they also have a loop on the back to help pull them on. These boots date back to the Victorian era, talk about someone old being new again! While today’s Chelsea boots are a bit more modern and super comfortable with today’s technology, they are also very versatile. These boots look great with skinny jeans or under boot-cut jeans. Pair them with some wide leg crops or even dress down your favorite dress.
3. Kitten Heel Boots
If you don’t like a high heel boot then you’re in luck! The kitten heel is everywhere this fall and can be found in both ankle boots and knee-high boots. A kitten heel is usually low, about 1-2 inches, and skinny but you can find some that have more of a skinny rectangle profile to add more stability. This is another example of a classic-style boot that is back on-trend.
4. Combat Boots
Military and combat boots are still really popular this season. They look great with jeans and leggings but they also look great with a casual fall dress. Also, don’t limit yourself to just neutral colors. Have fun adding some bright pops of color! I’m also seeing white combat boots everywhere! The best part about these boots is that not only are they on-trend, but they are comfortable and functional especially in those places that see snow. Check out Alison’s Five Ways To Wear It for more ideas on how to style combat boots.
5. Sock Boots
Sock boots are mainly characterized by being tight around the ankle. The ‘sock’ part can be just the upper part of the boot or could frame out the boot entirely. Although the term sock implies a knitted boot, sock boots can be made of suede, leather, or neoprene. These boots are pretty versatile and can be worn over skinny jeans, under bootcut jeans, or with a casual fall dress.

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.

Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.

GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
